The Realities of Eating Out

Today's post is about the realities of going out to eat. Although many people think dietitians are the food police, even we go out to eat once in awhile!! There are two difficult things about eating meals out aside from the cost, 1.) making a health choice 2) eating the correct portion size.In reference to point 1) recognizing that a healthy choice doesn't have to be a salad (although it is here). As well as, due to many of those hidden or extra tasty ingredients, even a salad could be an unhealthy choice. The best way to determine this if you're unsure is by taking a quick look at the restaurant's nutrient breakdown to see the item's carb, protein, and fat content and see if it is within the ranges you are looking for. Once you have gotten a better idea of this, you'll eventually be able to estimate the balance/if it is a good choice. Other ways to improve the health level of your item of choice is substitute sides such as side orders or veggies, beans, or baked potato (not loaded) instead of fries or onion rings. You can also order your dressings or sauces on the side. The second point may be even more important than the first is watching your portion sizes. This is important because, whether you decide you want the less healthy or more healthy option, the amount you eat will play a large role on the effects of your body, so consider ordering a box to go at the beginning of your meal and only leave your correct portion sizes on your plate! Most importantly, still allow eating a meal out to be an enjoyable experience, just be mindful of the decisions you make in relation to your health goals! Shout out to @oliveandfincheatery for the delicious cranberry almond, and quinoa salad with a refreshing glass of your fresh squeezed "all in one," most noticeably beet and ginger, juice (recommended 1 serving juice max/day)!
