The New Weight Loss Medications (GLP- 1 Agonists)- A Dietitian’s Perspective
A new category of weight loss medications has become overwhelmingly popular over the course of the past year due to seemingly consistent effective weight loss results with less severe side effects than many previous weight loss medications. This class of medications, known as GLP-1 inhibitors (that you probably know of as Ozempic, Wagovy, Mounjaro , or Simaglutide), has become an overwhelmingly commonly used weight loss tool, helping many individuals find successful weight loss, so I feel as a dietitian, it is important for me to discuss my perspective.
If you or someone you know are taking one of these medications, are considering taking one of these medications, or are just curious to learn more about the role these play in health, please take a few minutes out of your day to listen to my video.
During the video, I will discuss:
-the mechanism of action (how this medication is thought to work)
-considerations to make before or even while taking these medications and the importance of appropriate provider support from at least a doctor and dietitian.
-the importance of proper education and necessity of adequate, balanced nutrition despite decreased appetite in order to use these medications as a tool within developing a healthy life style while maintaining a healthy relationship with food, potentially minimizing side effects, and experiencing the best results
-ensuring you have explored disordered eating or eating disorder behaviors or tendencies as well as negative relationships with food and your body while working with a dietitian and/or a therapist in addition to your doctor before and during any decisions regarding weight loss medications.
-understanding the importance of these medications as a weight loss tool especially for those who need extra help in achieving improved health and healthy lifestyle, while also knowing that the number on the scale does not determine your health in itself and definitely does not determine your worth.
And more….
I hope you find this video useful and would love to hear your insights and questions!
*be sure to always speak with your doctor before taking or starting any new medications*
