A Guide to Eating Out- Guest Post

Today we have another great guest post from our intern Jessica Hamilton discussing some great tips to eat out without overeating or feeling guilty while still enjoying your favorite foods! Many times eating out can be a cause of stress for someone that is trying to improve their healthy eating lifestyle, but it does not have to be! In fact, eating out with friends and loved ones on occasion is a normal part of creating a healthy lifestyle. Check out the full post below for these great tips to enjoy eating out guilt free.

Grab a box

  • If you are someone who tends to pick at a meal just because it’s sitting there, order a box at the start of the meal. That way, you can portion out your plate and have leftovers!
  • Mindful Tip: Order a box either before ordering OR when you begin to feel full. Then box up whatever you have left of your meal.

Consider your beverages

  • Enjoying a flavorful drink or alcoholic drink can be part of a healthy and balanced diet!
  • Be mindful of how many beverages you are consuming. Consider drinking water in between drinks.
  • Excessive alcohol can cause low blood sugar (“drunchies” anyone?). So if you are drinking more than 2 alcoholic beverages, drink along with a carb and protein to keep your blood sugars normal.

You can still order your favorite dish!!

  • Try to visualize what that plate typically looks like. If it is lacking in protein, add some grilled chicken or salmon. If it is lacking a starch, add a baked potato. If it seems pretty balanced with the carbs and protein, see if you can add a healthy fat like avocado.
  • You can also add steamed broccoli or side salad to any entrée to add in some veggies.

Health up Your Sandwich!

  • Ask if they have a whole grain option for some extra fiber.
  • Ordering a burger + fries? Consider an “open-face” burger. Ask for only the top or bottom bun (your preference). Best of both worlds while staying balanced.
  • Add some extra veggies!

Sauce on the side

  • Ask for condiments, sauces, and dressings on the side that way you are in control.

Don’t arrive starving!

  • Some people think they need to “save their calories” for a meal out when in reality, this can lead to overeating.

I hope you enjoyed this great guest post and would love to hear any questions, tips you use when you go out to eat, or any feedback you have!

Wishing a fantastic week!
